High School Graduate: Caitlin {The Hockaday School, Dallas, TX}{Dallas, TX Photographer}

Congratulations to Caitlin, recent graduate of The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas!

Hockaday is one of the best all-girls private schools in Dallas.  The other (that I know of) is Ursuline.  My neighbor's daughters both graduated from Ursuline, so I had heard a little about the wonderful graduation ceremony traditions of these two schools.

Both schools have embraced a very classy, traditional ceremony.  The graduating girls at each school wear long white dresses and beautiful hats.  Ursuline graduates choose their dress and carry long stem red roses.  Hockaday girls all wear identical dresses and adorn their hats with beautiful floral arrangements.  The girls from both schools really treasure the experience!

As Caitlin carried her hat box around the Arboretum, I could tell how excited and proud she was.  By the time we arrived at our chosen location, even I was excited to see what was inside that box!

I wasn't disappointed.  The flowers were gorgeous.  Caitlin looked stunning!

Caitlin's session was scheduled at the Dallas Arboretum and took place right before her graduation ceremony.  Her family and grandparents joined her for pictures.  Caitlin did a great job coordinating everyone's outfits and chose the perfect complimentary color for her mother and grandmother to wear.  I wonder if she knew blue is directly opposite orange on the color wheel - making it the perfect choice!

Now, I have to be honest.  When I first bumped into Caitlin and her mom in the parking lot, I was really taken aback.  The last time I saw this family (other than Christmas cards) was about eight years ago when Jeremy was a student in my class at Providence.  Our son Stephen wasn't even born yet.  Now, he is as old as Jeremy was back then.

It hardly seems possible!

The shock of how grown up Caitlin and Jeremy have both become took my breath away.  I knew that eight years had gone by, but to be face-to-face with the changes was quite something.   They have both grown into such incredibly lovely young people!  I am so proud of them!

Mom and Dad, of course, haven't changed a bit!

It seems like just yesterday I was listening to Caitlin and Jeremy playing their musical instruments at our school's Grandparent's Day program.  How is that Caitlin can be moving on to college already?

Again...It hardly seems possible!

Man, do I sound like an old-lady pinching the cheeks of a small child, or what?

Needless to say, it was such an honor to be a part of documenting this special event for this precious family!  I'm so grateful.

And what a beautiful family it is!

Aw...I love their grandparents.  Can I adopt them?

One of these days I will share some very special pictures from this session that I know you will all love.  They are so, so very touching...I feel they deserve a post of their own.

Thank you for hiring me to create these portraits for you, Christine!  I look forward to your annual updates in Christmas cards to come.

Caitlin, I pray you enjoy your days at Rice.  I expect only greatness from you - and from Jeremy!

God Bless and Much Love!

Celebrating Laiken: Senior {Allen, TX Senior Photography}

I alluded briefly to the grand adventure we had during Laiken's senior session a few weeks back. It's just too good of a story not to share in detail. So, fasten your seat belts, everyone. You're in for a good ride - a wonderfully long road trip down memory lane!

Don't worry. You'll also find some beautiful images of Laiken in this post as well.

We had good reason to celebrate Laiken this night! Not only is she a recent Allen High School graduate (and now freshman at The University of Arkansas), but she has also survived two heart surgeries this past year.

Before I tell you about her session, I wanted to take the time to share Laiken's story with you.

In the Spring of 2010 Laiken was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and needed to have immediate corrective heart surgery. Her diagnosis was very similar to a condition that took the life of a young football player in our area around that time, so they were warned that this was very serious.

Laiken's first surgery to correct her Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was successful, but it also uncovered a second underlying condition - Right Ventricular Tachycardia - and the need for a second surgery. Unfortunately, the surgeons were unsuccessful in their attempt to correct this condition and a third surgery at another hospital was looming in their future.

Amazingly, this surgery has not been necessary. Unexplainably, Laiken's heart settled into somewhat of a "hold pattern" and she was able to start her senior year of High School as planned - stabilized by various medications and wearing a 24/7 portable heart monitor.

Laiken's mom Cindy later shared with me that Laiken is the youngest patient ever to have heart surgery at The Heart Hospital Baylor in Plano. Not surprisingly, she was quite the popular patient among the physicians and nurse staff during her hospital stays.

Their family and friends also rallied around them in support - which was a tremendous gift of encouragement to both Laiken and her family. Undoubtedly, their prayers hold the key to Laiken's unexpected recovery.

Through it all, Laiken has handled her situation with extreme grace and maturity beyond her years. As you can see, she is a gorgeous young lady! Her inner character makes her even more so.

You might recall that Laiken won my Senior Pictures Contest at the end of 2010. We have been waiting to schedule her session until the doctors okayed the removal of her heart monitor. By the time that happened and the rash from the tape had healed, we found ourselves in the middle of summer - and a sweltering one at that. But, it was now or never. Laiken was scheduled to leave for college in less than a month.

Yes, it was HOT! But, what a FUN session it was!

The adventure started while I was out location scouting in preparation for Laiken's session. I had been eying this little run-down historical house in town for quite some time now. I've been itching to take pictures there, but the right client just hadn't come along.

Until now. Laiken was my girl! I just knew it!

After taking a closer look at the location, my brain was spinning with so many fantastic ideas. I was really looking forward to creating something out of the ordinary at that site and knew Laiken was perfect for what I had in mind.

Imagine my disappointment at the discovery of a (recently used) sleeping bag in the upstairs loft of that very same abandoned jewel of a location. It turns out I wasn't the only one trespassing.

Someone had made a temporary home out of my prized location!

I wasn't exactly excited about bringing a client into a situation where it was highly likely an unexpected visitor might decide to join us. I'm all for an adventure - just not of that sort.

My friend Debra Klawetter (who came along on the session to assist) agreed. It wasn't safe. Instantly, my hopes and dreams came crashing down.

Scratch Plan A!

Location B was a lush, beautifully back-lit, tree-lined, green pasture I had stumbled across (i.e. scouted out). It promised to be the perfect backdrop for the recently borrowed, green velvet, antique settee I had planned for Laiken's session.

Thank you, Chantel!

Just as we were about to position the settee, Debra made another unwelcome discovery.

Poison Ivy - and quite a bit of it.

Thank Goodness for the baby wipes Cindy keeps stowed away in her car. Debra and I quickly wiped off our ankles and said a quick prayer of thanks that my highly allergic client hadn't yet made contact with the lush patch of ivy.

So much for Plan B!

Did I mention it was well over 100 degrees?

That reminds me...

Before Laiken's session I had arranged for some portable, outdoor, on-location cooling. The plan was to plug in a box fan to my husband's portable battery pack. Hopefully, it would provide a little relief for Laiken during her session.

Just as we planned, Cindy and Laiken arrived with a trunk full of clothing and accessories - and the large box fan Cindy had borrowed from a friend.

There was just one problem.

Somehow, in the midst of loading Debra's gear into the back of my Tahoe, my husband's portable battery pack never made it into my car.

Major BUMMER!

It was a brilliant plan in theory, though, don't you think?

Thank goodness for the cooler full of water Cindy and Debra packed - and for the many paper towels that absorbed all my sweat!

I consider it nothing short of a miracle that Laiken's makeup held up in that heat! She was a trooper, that's for sure! And a beautiful one at that.

That's where "Everything That Could Go Wrong That Did Go Wrong" ends, and all the fun begins.

Location C was perfect!

I have been in downtown McKinney many times, but for some reason I had never discovered this quaint little historical village before. Just the day before I had driven past and made a mental note to remember the location for future sessions. It simply wasn't on my radar for Laiken's session as I was already dead set on Location A.

That quickly changed after my sleeping bag discovery and after our close call with poison ivy. So, when Debra suggested the very same location, I didn't hesitate. On the plus side, it afforded us a very much needed air-conditioned escape from the heat while we made the 15 minute drive from Allen to McKinney.

It turned out to be a perfect spot! (Take a look at the first two images above.)

Though we enjoyed the secluded historical village, the true adventure was yet to come...

Right after sunset, we headed off to one of my favorite alleys in downtown McKinney for some off-camera flash photography. What a treat to have Debra on hand to assist with the flash. Even Cindy helped out. She was pretty much a pro with the video light by the end of the night.

Thank you so much, ladies!

Sound fun? It was. But it pales in comparison to what happens next.

Here's the scene:

Nestled half-way down the alley-way is one of my favorite little spots. There's this rustic green, European-looking, double door with a small stoop to sit on. I'm in the middle of posing Laiken when the door opens abruptly, and out pops the restaurant's bartender.

Even though it's dark out, it is still sweltering hot at this point.

The bartender (a young guy in his early twenties) takes one look at Laiken and wastes no time in inviting us to move our session indoors. He explains that other photographers use the bar all the time to photograph local bands and assures us we'll love the setting.

The three moms in our little group see right through it all. This guy has noticed Laiken and is flirting big time! But, hey. If his plan includes air-conditioning, we are all for it!

The bar is closed. Other than the bartender, we would have the place to ourselves. It was perfect! We take a peak inside and before we even head up to the bar, we see this charming chandelier.

The air conditioning could wait...at least for one more shot.

Impromptu shot completed, we head indoors. A "second wind" comes on in full force, and we spend the next hour or so laughing and having a truly great time celebrating Laiken - and our good furtune in being welcomed into this unexpected air-conditioned haven.

And, for the first time that evening, Laiken really let loose.

Who would have thought we'd get some of our favorite shots of the night - in a bar?

Don't Worry!

I don't plan on making a habit of bringing my underage clients to a bar. BUT, if it is over 100 degrees outside, your mom is tagging along, the bar is closed, empty, AND air conditioned...I might just reconsider.

Thank you to our new friend who opened up his bar and gave us a nice cool drink (of ice-water)!

You made our night!

And thank you to Cindy, Laiken, and Debra for making this one of my most memorable sessions ever! I'm glad we all decided to "go with the flow". What wonderful things came our way because of it! Our unexpected turn of events ended up being the perfect way to celebrate Laiken - and send her off to college.

I so admire Cindy and Laiken - for their courage, tenacity, grace, and beauty in facing (and conquering) this life trial. I can't wait to see what their futures hold.

I wish you the very best in your college endeavors, Laiken! Your mom will adjust to her empty nest just fine. I have no doubts!

Laiken: Senior {Allen, TX Senior Photographer}

I couldn't wait! I just had to share at least one quick image from Laiken's senior session before I head off to Indiana in a couple days to cover Stacie and Tim's wedding.

Laiken's session was a grand adventure full of thrilling suprises. Like Laiken's mom Cindy said, "memories are made of such things".

What things, you ask?

Don't worry, I'll fill you in on all the fun details after the wedding and after our vacation. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more of this breathtakingly beautiful young lady (and her incredibly fun story) in the next couple months.

Enjoy your summer, everyone!

Hanna's Photo Party: Sara {Plano, TX Senior Photography}{Allen, TX Senior Photography}

I've already told you about Hanna's younger sister, Sara. Some of my favorite shots of Sara that night were some of the last group of shots we took. I love her against this blue wall.

Are you shy in front of the camera? Give it a few minutes. You'll warm up. Just like Sara did. Take a look!

Monica, your girls are gorgeous!

Hanna's Photo Party: Maria T {Plano, TX Senior Photography}{Allen, TX Senior Photography}

Before I forget to mention, you can vote for Maria by clicking on the Like button at the top of this post. Your vote could help her win a free 11x14.

Maria was a true joy to photograph. Quiet at first, I was curious to see how well she would do in front of the camera. I had nothing to worry about, she was a natural. Like Hanna, she is a great young lady.

Maria is another natural beauty. I love her big brown eyes and her glowing olive skin (which reminds me of my own daughter Alden). Take a look at her eye-lashes. They go on for miles. Usually boys are the ones with naturally long lashes. Maria is one of the lucky ones, I guess.

Here you go, Maria. These are a few of my favorites from Hanna's photo party. I should have everyone's galleries up by tomorrow evening.

One thing I was completely impressed with has nothing to do with Maria's looks. Toward the end of the session her father called and requested she come home as soon as she could. Though we were in the middle of her session and we were having a great time, she didn't once complain. She didn't bad mouth her dad for putting an end to her fun. She simply obeyed. My children often hear me tell them (sometimes in a little song) "We listen and obey, the very first time with a happy heart." How refreshing to see a modern day young adult, from a culture that isn't always very respectful of their elders, do just that.

I'm proud of you girl!

Hanna's Photo Party: Brandon {Plano, TX Senior Photography}{Allen, TX Senior Photography}

While Margaret was working with the Hanna, Maria, Sara, and Maria, Brandon and I had our session one level lower in the parking garage. He is a student at UT Arlington and had limited time with us that night, so we got to work right away.

I'm LOVING his pictures! In my opinion these would be great artwork for a Rock album - or head shots for a modeling portfolio. I'm especially proud of that awesome, natural smile I got out of him!

Don't forget to VOTE for Brandon so he can win a free 11x14. After I post all of the sneak peaks from Hanna's Photo Party, I'll count up all the LIKES under their blog posts and announce the winner. And now with the Like button right below the title of this post - you have no excuse not to vote. It's easy-peasy.

Here you go, Brandon. I'll have the rest on my site by Wednesday.

Hanna's Photo Party: Hanna {Plano, TX Senior Photography}{Allen, TX Senior Photography}

Here you go, Hanna - just a few more from your photo party. There's more to come.

To those of you who are Hanna's friends, I wanted to be sure to tell you about our little photo party CONTEST going on. If you press the "like" button on Hanna's photo album on my facebook fan page AND take the time to press the "like" button on the fan page itself as well, Hanna could end up winning a free 11x14.

We'll do the same for each of the five young people who participated in Hanna's Photo Party. After I post all five of the sneak peaks, I'll count up all the "likes" in each gallery. The person with the most "votes" will win the prize.

Keep your eyes out, we may just have to have a contest for YOU to win something too...

Good Luck, Hanna!

Hanna's Photo Party {Plano, TX Senior Photographer}{Allen, TX Senior Photographer}

Hanna and I have known each other now for a couple of years. I first met her when my neighbor organized a group of girls for me to photograph when I was first building my teen portfolio two years ago. Hanna was the only one of those original five girls (other than my neighbor) who kept in touch. She's a sweet heart through and through, and I just think the world of her. And, after meeting her mom and sister during this session it's clear to see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

To say Hanna is beautiful is an understatement. She's one of those lucky few in the world who looks great even without makeup - she's a true classic beauty. This time around Hanna's a senior in high school. With her help we organized another photo party (for which she earns free prints) with a different spin in mind. This is just the first round of our big plan. Believe me, the best is yet to come. We have something truly unique and exciting planned for the next sessions.

For this first session, everyone met at my house and brought along all their wardrobe options. We had a blast selecting outfits for the group shots and individual portraits. It was mayhem for sure, but the good sort. We had plans to shoot at Legacy Books for a "back to school" vibe, but their doors were closed when we got there (as in for good). Why they failed to mention that on their website is beyond me. No worries, we quickly decided to move the session to the parking garage nearby, and the results were pretty amazing.

Let's get to it! I want you to meet Hanna's friends: Brandon, Maria, Maria, and Sara (who happens to be Hanna's sister).

I don't want to keep these wonderful young people waiting much longer. They've been patiently waiting for my internet service to get back up and running all day long so I could publish this post - as have I (only not quite as patiently). Be on the look out for their individual sneak peaks in the days to come.

I'll also be posting some information about our new Senior Photo Party packages soon, so keep an eye out for that as well. You won't want to miss out on the great deals. Photo Parties are a great way to make your senior pictures more memorable and affordable by sharing the session fee and the experience with your friends. They're a total blast!

Thanks so much for coming out for the session, everyone! You were all such a pleasure to work with! We'll have your client galleries up in a few days.

First up, meet Hanna (our photo party hostess you could say)! As always, Hanna, you are simply stunning...

I shot this image of Maria while she was getting ready in the backseat of the car. The lighting was perfect, so I grabbed the camera and created this lovely portrait of her. I love Maria's natural beauty and her inviting smile.

Brandon has one of those faces that the camera just LOVES. I can't wait for you to see the rest of his images. They are Seriously Fantastically Cool! I enjoyed getting to know you, Brandon, and am super proud of the HUGE smile I captured of you at the very end of our session - just you wait! Thanks for coming out all the way from Arlington!

Maria made me LOVE being a photographer. Seriously, this girl is a KNOCK-OUT and was so comfortable in front of the camera. She's such a genuinely nice person too. It was great meeting you, girl!

Hanna's sister Sara showed up a little later with her mom. What a nice surprise to meet part of Hanna's family. Sara reminds me of Hanna two years ago. Back then Hanna was the shy one in front of the camera. Now, Sara is. It makes me excited to see what two years from now will bring for Sara. In the meantime, I'm loving Sara's shy personality. She's real as real can be and doesn't pretend to be anything she's not. What you see is what you get. Not, bad, huh? Pretty darn lovely if you ask me.

A good friend of mine came along on this photo shoot. She ALWAYS inspires me to be at my creative best and I just genuinely enjoy shooting with her. Besides, she doesn't have children of her own yet, so I know she's always up for a late night session at short notice. Margaret will be posting some of her own pictures from this session on Facebook in a couple weeks. I'll be sure to link to her page when those are out.

Margaret was taking some group shots of the girls while I was working with Brandon on a lower level of the parking garage. I turned around and caught this glimpse through the guard rails and LOVED it! Now, if only I could decide what I like better. The natural lighting...

or the silhouette...

Feel free to help me decide!

Thanks again everyone for coming out and making this night so much fun!

If you liked what you saw here, travel on back to my facebook page and hit the "Like" button. It's the easiest way to get all the latest news on the happenings here at TLP.
